PEACE POSTER CONTEST
"CREATE A BRIGHTER TOMORROW"
By Edith M. Danforth (781) 933-2661
2003-2004 DISTRICT PEACE POSTER CHAIRMAN
The Peace Poster Contest was created in 1988 to give young people the opportunity to creatively express their feelings for world peace and to share their visions with the world. Approximately 350,000 children, from more than 65 countries participate in the contest annually. Again this year, thousands of young people from around the world will be challenged to express their thoughts and visions of this yearís theme, "Create A Brighter Tomorrow".
Once again, I am asking you to help our program with a small donation to help with the expenses of the Peace Poster Program. Expenses run around $800, but as always, there are unexpected expenses and costs increased.
I want you to know that last yearís peace poster contest was a success because of you. Through your generous donations, we were able to help our youth by rewarding them for their efforts and thus bring honor to their Lions Club, school and community.
Lions working together to help the youth of our community is always a rewarding experience. With your support, we will continue to work to reach our goal for a Bigger and Brighter Future for 2003-2004.
"Thank you for being who you are, and doing what you
do. Who you are is wonderful, what you do is important. Together we will
achieve the extraordinary."
33N Youth Speech Competition News
Chairman Lion Harold Simpson
All clubs should have received a package of materials for this yearís Speech Contest. It was mailed to last yearís Presidents in May. If you, the current President need a package, please contact the 2003-2004 Speech Chair, Harold Simpson.
With the Mid-Winter, District Speech Competition, not occurring until February 21st, you should have enough time to find students interested before the Club Contest deadline of December 23rd, a month later than in recent past years.
All clubs will be sent new Trifolds showing the corrected dates for
the 2003-2004 Youth Speech year. Please support our efforts by finding
a Lion willing to bring the program to your schools and also through a
donation for the 33N You Speech Competition.
WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO BESIDES AN INFORMATION NIGHT?
If your club has already had an Information Night, there are other opportunities to invite many perspective members to a Lions event. Consider one of the following:
Special Guest Night ó Invite a special guest speaker to address your club and open it up to your whole community. Advertise in the newspaper, create posters, and call perspective members. Instead of a dinner meeting, schedule this in a public building (less expensive, and more open to the public). Have light refreshments, speak about Lionism in your community, and introduce the guest speaker.
Invite a Friend Night ó Similar to the Special Guest Night, ask each member to bring a friend to a meeting. All who bring a guest are eligible for a special door prize/free meal OR all who donít bring a friend, get fined by the Tail Twister. Be creative. Challenge your members. Your friends will learn more about Lionism even if they do not join!
Thank You Party - Invite all the businesses and acquaintances that have supported your club by buying ads, donating items, giving discounts, hosting sales tables, to a thank you party. Have light refreshments, speak about
Lionism in your community and how they have helped to make a difference.
Perhaps have a Lions guest speaker who can talk about one of our programs.
Donít forget to follow up with those who attend any of the above events.
Usually, if someone attends, they are interested in learning more about
Lions.

I have been appointed as 33N Chair of the Lions Eye Health Program 2003-2007 and Multiple District 33 Chair of the Lions Eye Health Program 2003-2006. Lions Clubs International through LCIF ó Sight first plans to upgrade the LEHP program this year.
Linda Arsenault, President of the Stoneham Lions Club recently became LEHP Club Chair 2003-2004 and joins with me, the Chair of the Salisbury Lions Club, Joan Purdy, President and Chair of the Danvers Club, Norm & Linda Doucette, Co-chairs of the Winchester Club, Dave Berglind, Chair of the Action Club, and Lions Toby & Linda Lynch, Co-Chairs of the Haverhill Club to spread educational, informational about eye diseases such as Glaucoma, Age related Macular Degeneration, Cataracts, and Diabetic Eye Disease in our community.
Last year twenty-six of the fifty-five Lions Clubs in 33N named an LEHP Chair to spread the LEHP information. We would appreciate it if each and every club would appoint a LEHP Chair for 2003-2004. The job is easy. The LEHP Chair leaves information pertaining to eye disease education and awareness at Senior Centers, Public Libraries, City or Town Halls, and other high traffic areas, a simple public announcement in the local newspaper and/or cable to indicate where one may pick up the information and keep the places stocked.
LEHP information is available on LCIFís website for a small charge and is available free from the National Eye Institute and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. I would be glad to assist you. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
